We also serve as expert consultants on tile selection. We take the time to learn more about your intended application and then can make recommendations as to whether you should consider porcelain tile, ceramic tile, glass tile, or other tile.

Tile Installation Methods

You can evaluate a tile job by how flat it is. A better tile job will have a smoother flow. We call it the “frozen ocean.” It’s not level, but it’s flat from tile to tile. There are no tripping hazards, “kickers,” as we call them. It follows what the floor is doing. They are flat relative to each other. Not that the surface has to be all level, because the actual foundation isn’t so that would be impossible, but the important thing is that there aren’t any places in the tile where one of the pieces sticks up and can stub your toe.

The larger tiles, the 18”-24” sizes, take more effort on many fronts. Every slab undulates up and down, has valleys and hills. So the bigger the tile, the more problems you have in overcoming those inconsistencies. You need to use more mud and a thicker-notch trowel to apply so it can sit level. It also takes more time for cutting and wear-and-tear on your cutting blades. It takes a lot more finesse. The smaller the tile, the easier it is to go over the undulations in the floor.

There is an ANSI spec book that has the tolerances for tile. And sometimes with the tolerances, if there is a bump in the floor, you do have to split the difference. This is something you’ll want to discuss with your contractor.
